Amsterdam Expeditions to the West Indian Islands, Report 49. Beschreibung des Thermocyclops Hastatus antillensis n. ssp. mit einem Bestimmungsschlüssel für die Gattung Thermocyclops Kiefer, 1927 Naturalis
Herbst, Hans-Volkmar.
In a well on the island of Guadeloupe (West Indies) a new subspecies of Thermocyclops was found, belonging to the schmeili group. It is closely related to Thermocyclops hastatus Kiefer, 1952 (described as Th. schmeili hastatus), but because of some morphological peculiarities the population is designated as Thermocyclops hastatus antillensis n. ssp. In addition the fact is considered that all hitherto known species and subspecies of the schmeili group are found in the Tropics of the Old World (Africa, Zanzibar, Madagascar and India). A key is provided of Thermocyclops, mainly based on the literature.

AN ALTERNATIVE APPROACH TO DEFINING AND ASSESSING POVERTY THRESHOLDS AgEcon
Blaylock, James R.; Smallwood, David M..
This paper introduces a new method for defining poverty lines based on an individual' s self-evaluation of the household's present situation. The proposed method focuses on the minimum household income necessary to purchase food supplies evaluated by society to be barely adequate. The method is especially useful for evaluation and comparing poverty thresholds derived from different methods. It is also valuable for comparing the official U.S. poverty guidelines across households of different sizes. The approach can be extended to include estimation of thresholds differentiated by various household characteristics and comparison of thresholds across these characteristics.

AN ALTERNATIVE APPROACH TO THE EVALUATION OF GOAL HIERARCHIES AMONG FARMERS AgEcon
van Kooten, G. Cornelis; Schoney, Richard A.; Hayward, Keith A..
Results of a study of goal orderings of Saskatchewan farmers who participate in the province's FARMLAB Program are presented. We use the method of fuzzy pair-wise comparisons which allows the respondent to indicate a degree of preference between two alternative goal statements, thereby providing more information than in the binary case. From survey data ratio-scale scores are constructed for eight goal statements, and these are regressed on a set of farm enterprise and household characteristics and a psychological locus-of-control (or I-E) score. The empirical results indicate that goodness-of-fit measures are better than those obtained by other researchers, perhaps because a psychological measure (I-E score) is included as an explanatory variable for...

AN ASSESSMENT OF HAY MARKET INSTITUTIONS AND COORDINATION FUNCTIONS AgEcon
Miller, Jeffrey H..
The experience of Michigan farmers illustrates the dilemma faced by hay growers: while hay production has received a great deal of attention, hay marketing has been neglected. Supplies of high quality hay can be expanded within the span of a single growing season, but the marketing system generates prices which do not always clear the market and which do not serve as accurate signals to guide planning decisions. More fundamentally, there are no effective market mechanisms to generate those prices, to match buyers and sellers, or to move hay cheaply from surplus to deficit regions. Clearly, this is not because hay is a minor crop. In Michigan, hay is the second largest crop grown on a per acre basis. Apart from the direct economic value of hay, it has...

AN ASSESSMENT OF THE COMPETITIVE POSITION OF GREAT LAKES PORTS IN THE INTERNATIONAL STEAM COAL MARKET AgEcon
Senf, David R.; Fruin, Jerry E..
This report, using a linear programming model to minimize total delivered world steam coal costs, analyzes future coal trade flows. Assessing the possibility of exporting Northern Great Plains coal through the St. Lawrence via the twin ports of Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin is the main goal of the study. World steam coal trade flows are projected for the years 1985, 1990 and 2000 through the linear programming model. The model includes demand from 25 coal importing nations and supply from 19 coal producing regions around the world.

AN ASSESSMENT OF THE NJARE AgEcon
Broder, Josef M..
Assessments of the NJARE and other agricultural economic journals by faculty in the Northeast Region were contrasted to those made by faculty in other regions. Faculty in the Northeast judged the NJARE to be of high professional quality and personal usefulness and felt that the NJARE had made substantial quality improvements. A strong regional character in the NJARE was evidenced by low journal participation rates by faculty in other regions. Impacts of recent changes in the Journal and the need for future assessments were discussed.

An enigmatic suppressed book by Lotsy on the Monocotyledons of Java Naturalis
Steenis, C.G.G.J. van.
Among the numerous works of J.P. Lotsy Mrs. M.J. van Steenis-Kruseman (Fl. Mai. I, 1, 1950, 331a) cited ’Die Monocotylenflora von Java (1904)’ a citation derived from the biography of Lotsy by WA Goddijn (Genetica 13, 1931, xiv). It appears that after his stay in Java (1895—1900) Lotsy had decided to frame a work on the flowering plants of Java within the scheme ’Flore de Buitenzorg’ initiated by Melchior Treub. He started this probably in Leiden in 1900 still working on it until 1905. It would represent volume 7 of Treub’s work.

An Improved Credit Scoring Function for the St. Paul Bank for Cooperatives AgEcon
Fischer, Martin L.; Moore, Karen.
A new credit scoring function for classifying Bank of Cooperatives loans, pricing loans based on credit risk, screening loan applications, and diagnosing credit weaknesses was estimated using stepwise logistic regression analysis. Two versions were estimated, dichotomous and polychotomous. The dichotomous model is judged superior for the above uses. The model was tested for validity for different types of cooperatives. In a combined estimating and test sample of 708 cooperatives, the model correctly classifies 92 percent of cooperatives in a 2-class system and 70 percent in a 4-class system.
